How to Stay Fit During the Holidays

Dr. Sarah Leahy Granite

The holiday season is my favorite time of the year. It brings along the smell of fireplaces being used on a brisk December evening. Slowly we begin decorating our homes in our own fashion. Even though the weather is getting colder, days are getting shorter and the snow has begun to fall, we get to enjoy warm, cozy blankets and hot chocolate. We also begin preparing for guests, traveling and most importantly food.

Food is something that always brings people together. It may bring families together, it may bring strangers together. It creates a social environment, while comforting the belly. The holiday season brings about many social gatherings which all have large meals in common. But how do we stay in shape when every situation revolves around eating? Here are a few tips to keep off some additional calories.

First, if you are hosting the gathering, you can be in charge of the food and make healthier options. Delegate your guests to bring different types of vegetables and salads as a side dish, or make them yourself. Avoid frozen desserts and canned sauces since they are usually loaded with sugar and preservatives. Plan your recipes ahead of time so that you aren’t rushing around last minute.

Exercise is essential! If you’re traveling, remember to pack some work-out clothing. Just because it’s the holiday, it doesn’t mean you can’t go for a run. Wake up a bit earlier and get it over with. You’ll be glad you did it as it never happens if you wait.

The third tip on staying fit during the holidays is an easy one to remember. Eat until you are satisfied, not until you’re full. Just because there is a lot of food in front of you doesn’t mean you have to finish it. The brain takes more time than the stomach to realize that you are full. This is why we can continue eating past the point satiation. To make this easier, use a smaller plate, take smaller bites and slow down. You can even use a smaller utensil if available. This will aid in preventing you from eating until you’re full.

The holidays are a very exciting time of the year, but don’t let it throw you off of your good habits. We work so hard during the year; this is just another hurdle in the path of good health. We could either let it get in the way or surpass it.
